Much of this year has been driven by technology that is responding to the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to everyone working or schooling from home during the pandemic, there has been a pressing need for remote identity verification. Remote identity software typically operates by taking a selfie photo or video of a person, and comparing it with a known identity document held by that person. The document is then checked to determine if it is genuine and the selfie face is matched to the ID photo image from the document. A liveness check is also typically performed. Certification programmes for these applications, like FIDO IDWG, are under development.

As outlined in the State of Biometrics Report, touchless recognition is getting a boost due to COVID-19. Of course, face recognition is naturally touchless and many systems are using face. For fingerprint recognition, non-contact fingerprint systems include those which involve a photograph of the fingers, taken with a mobile device. There are also systems which are a kiosk where an individual holds or waves their hand across a sensor. Continued standards development and expanded testing is underway as this technology matures.

This is a new report of fourteen of our supplier members’ thoughts and ideas on how to help the coronavirus recovery.

Submissions range from standards for the development and testing of vaccine passports, to hygiene safety in elections to biometric technology and the future of sport.

This is an all-new update to the report we published in March 2020. A year on, and our understanding of the threat and possible solutions to control it have changed. So we’ve gone back to our supplier members and asked them to update us.

Read the 2020 report here.

In light of the COVID-19 outbreak we asked our supplier members to offer solutions and concepts in a time of a pandemic to help build a resilient, international response. The submissions include, but go beyond, how biometric technology can help reduce virus spread in offices, hospitals, airports, and secure locations which rely on fingerprint readers, card access or manual processes and address questions about contactless products and hygiene.

Nineteen member organisations submitted papers outlining solutions from secure election e-voting, user verification in healthcare to contactless payments and remote onboarding. The document covers evaluating air traveller temperatures, retrofitting fingerprint readers with disinfecting technology and the implications of masks and gloves.

The Biometrics Institute does not endorse any of the submissions in the report but we are sharing them to help generate discussion at this challenging time.

We have also released an overview of contactless finger scanners based on a short supplier members survey. Read in the members-only Information Hub now.

Soft biometric modalities have shown their utility in different applications including reducing the search space significantly. This leads to improved recognition performance, reduced computation time, and faster processing of test samples. Some common soft biometric modalities are ethnicity, gender, age, hair color, iris color, presence of facial hair or moles, and markers. This research focuses on performing ethnicity and gender classification on iris images. We present a novelsupervised autoencoder based approach, Deep Class-Encoder, which uses class labels to learn discriminative representation for the given sample by mapping the learned feature vector to its label. The proposed model is evaluated on two datasets each for ethnicity and gender classification. The results obtained using the proposed Deep Class-Encoder demonstrate its effectiveness in comparison to existing approaches and state-of-the-art methods.

In this paper, we study the problem of Face Recognition (FR) when using Single Sensor Multi-Wavelength (SSMW) imaging systems that operate in the Short-Wave Infrared (SWIR) band. The contributions of our work are four fold: First, a SWIR database is collected when using our developed SSMW system under the following scenarios, i.e. Multi-Wavelength (MW) multi-pose images were captured when the camera was focused at either 1150, 1350 or 1550 nm. Second, an automated quality-based score level fusion scheme is proposed for the classification of input MW images. Third, a weighted quality-based score level fusion scheme is proposed for the automated classification of full frontal (FF) vs. nonfrontal (NFF) face images. Fourth, a set of experiments is performed indicating that our proposed algorithms, for the classification of (i) multiwavelength images and (ii) FF vs. NFF face images, are beneficial when designing different steps of multi-spectral face recognition (FR) systems, including face detection, eye detection and face recognition. We also determined that when ourSWIR-based system is focused at 1350 nm, the identification performance increases compared to focusing the camera at any of the other SWIR wavelengths available. This outcome is particularly important for unconstrained FR scenarios, where imaging at 1550 nm, at long distances and when operating at night time environments, is preferable over different SWIR wavelengths.

Handwritten Signature Recognition is a biometric mode that has started to be deployed. Therefore, it is necessary to analyse the robustness of the recognition process against Presentation Attacks, to find its vulnerabilities. Using the results of a previous work, the vulnerabilities are detected and two Presentation Attack Detection techniques have been implemented. With such implementations, a new evaluation has been performed, showing an improvement in the performance. Error rates have been lowered from about 20% to below 3% under operational conditions.
